Surrounded by People, Still Completely Alone

Play Video

You can have a full calendar, a marriage, and a room full of friends, and still be drowning. Here’s the loneliness most men never see coming, and what it costs.

Full description:

Loneliness isn’t about being alone. Some of the loneliest moments of my life happened in rooms full of people who liked me, because not one of them knew what I was actually carrying.

This is the storm of loneliness, and it’s the one men cover best. In this video I take you into the loneliest stretch of my life, the years I spent on the road during my addiction, checking into empty hotel rooms in towns where nobody knew me, building a second life out of secrets I couldn’t tell the one person who did know me. I talk about why a man alone with his secrets isn’t just lonely, he’s in danger, and how isolation feeds the very thing that deepens it.

I get into why men stay in this storm, the image we hold up at work, at church, even at home, and the pride hiding underneath it that keeps us isolated for years. And I talk about the version of this storm that should scare you most: the quiet one, where you’ve made your wife your only connection, and then she’s the one who needs care, and there’s no one left to hold you up.

The men who survive this storm build their circle before it hits, not after the diagnosis, not after the marriage breaks. Before. Because when the storm comes, you can’t build the circle and survive it at the same time.

This isn’t the how-to-make-friends video, that’s the first foundation stone. This is about what the storm feels like from the inside, and why being known, not just surrounded, is the only thing that gets you through it.

Next time: the storm of anger, where it comes from, and what it’s really covering.
